Portable Snuff Box

Turned rosewood circa 1885 with inlaid geometric decoration including Van Dyke triangles, keyline. A fantastically complex geometric pattern reminiscent of a rose window. Generally speaking marquetry of this type is associated with the earlier stages of Tunbridge ware from before the advent of tesselated mosaic wares in the spa town. However, the great wheel of fashion is ever turning and many manufacturers began making wares of this kind from around 1880 onwards, particularly on smaller items such as this box.
